Discovering Samboan

Aguinid Falls

My life has been a series of unplanned adventures and it all started with my trip to Samboan, a province in southern Cebu, 2 years ago. It was just a week after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Bohol when my friend texted me one morning that we are going to her hometown that afternoon. We already had plans about going somewhere but I never thought that it would push through given the circumstances during that time, but hey nothing could stop our adventurous spirit.

We were able to ask permission from our ever supportive loving parents (special thanks to them by the way) and packed our bags like greased lightning. Soon enough by 4pm, we were already heading towards South Bus Terminal where we took a bus (Ceres Bus) going to Samboan.

Bus Groufie
The bus left at around 5 and it was roughly a 3 1/2 hour journey going to Samboan. It was almost 9 when we arrived at Beverly's ancestral house, her grandparents were so kind in preparing dinner for us since we were already tired and famished due to the very long trip. After dinner we decided to go to sleep and save our energy for the next day's adventure.

We woke up early the following day and had a quick breakfast since we were excited to start our adventure. The first on our list was Aguinid Falls, which was a few kilometers away from where we were staying.

We trekked for half an hour before reaching the falls, but I have to say that it was worth it. The Aguinid Falls was beautiful but what made its beauty even more special was the fact that it was still in its virgin state and was not yet exploited by humans.

The falls is actually composed of 5 different tiers (we only visited 2 out of 5 tiers) but if you intend of getting to the top then be prepared to get wet.

We played like kids and took a lot of pictures that we haven't noticed that 3 hours had already passed but it was still the beginning of our adventures.

If you ever get tired of falls-hopping you could always drop by the beach just like we did.

Aside from getting wet in the Aguinid Falls and the beach, we also had the chance to visit other must see places in Samboan. We went to the church of St. Michael, which was made of coral stones and one of Cebu's oldest church. Right next to the church was Campanario de Antigua, which was a belfry and a watchtower back in the 1700s, just like any other belltowers its main purpose was to guard the town from invaders.

Situated at the foot of the belltower is Escala de Jacob (Ladder of Jacob), built in 1878 during the term of Father Gerzon. This manunggol stone stairs provide easy access for the Samboanons coming from the coastal areas to the church grounds.

There was more to see in Samboan despite its laidback atmosphere but the places that we've been to for our 2 day stay there was enough to conclude that it was indeed a beautiful town. A town that Cebuanos should be proud of.

Louella :)

I cannot provide a budget breakdown since we only payed for our transportation. Food and lodging was shouldered by Beverly and her mom (Thank you kaayo tita :))

PS: Sorry for the very lousy writeup, I'll do better next time.
